In Italy, the restrictive anti-CoV measures of recent weeks appear to be taking effect. For the fourth consecutive day, a decrease in the number of patients requiring treatment in intensive care units has been reported, the President of Italy’s Supreme Health Institute, Franco Locatelli, reported at a press conference in Rome today. The epidemic curve is rising less rapidly.

The R-value has dropped, but the number of infected people, which is about 41,000 per day, is still too high, he said, so there is no let-up in the fight against the epidemic. The goal is to reduce the R-value below 1.0 in order to prevent the health system from being overburdened. The R-value shows how many people on average are infected by a person infected with the virus.

Expert: Give up even at Christmas
Locatelli called on the Italians to make further sacrifices before the Christmas holidays. However, the expert warned that precautions would have to be taken at Christmas as well.

Last week, the government in Rome had divided the country with 60 million inhabitants into three zones – yellow, orange and red. Most recently, more than half of the 20 Italian regions were subject to strict restrictions.

Meanwhile, Italy yesterday recorded a new record of almost 41,000 new coronavirus infections within 24 hours. During this period, 550 people died in connection with Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases detected in Italy to just over 1.1 million. More than 44,000 people have already died with the coronavirus. Currently, about 3,200 coronavirus patients are reported to be in intensive care.
